Iconic Pop Stars

Elvis Presley

It could be argued that without Elvis there would be no rock and roll as we know it. He remains one of the most iconic figures in all of popular music. His style was controversial at the time but he managed to amass a huge following of young fans.

David Bowie

With his androgynous look and rejection of normality, Bowie was a breath of fresh air for listeners in the 1970s. As his music changed so too did his style. Over the decades he created a number of distinct on stage personas.

Prince

During the 1980s Prince had a fierce rivalry with Michael Jackson. Both were trying to become the King of Pop. Prince is instantly recognisable thanks to his flamboyant costumes and high pitched vocals.

Madonna

She is similar to Bowie in that they have both changed their personas multiple times throughout the decades. Madonna is sometimes considered the greatest female pop star of all time. She gained a fair amount of controversy with her single Like A Prayer. A number of critics called the music video offensive due to its mixture of religious and sexual imagery.

Paul McCartney

He became an iconic at a young age thanks to his role as a member of The Beatles. When the group disbanded he proved that he was talented enough to go solo. For half a century he has released chart topping tracks.

Eminem

The rap scene of the 2000s was dominated by hits from Eminem. He found a winning formula that included comedic, obscene lyrics and beats created by hip hop icons. He won an Oscar in 2003 for his song Lose Yourself.

Elton John

Elton John has proven over the years that he is a master at the piano. He has produced a very impressive number of hit singles. These include I Guess That’s Why They Call It The Blues, Tiny Dancer and Rocket Man.

Bob Marley

Without Bob Marley, the genre of reggae may not have achieved commercial success in the US and UK. Marley originally played with his band, The Wailers before going solo. Thanks to him reggae is now a key part of pop music.

Lady Gaga

Gaga has caused several controversies due to her uncompromising style. She started out as an avant garde musical artist. She has now gained mainstream success thanks to her lead role in the musical, A Star Is Born.
